I would like to reiterate that I think Alexey's core insight is a good and important one. People are terrible at applying the golden rule here. They cannot see that if suddenly their own income dropped rapidly as a result of foreign sanctions, they would in fact be less empowed to fight their dictator, not more, and probably less inclined to do so as well. And if you don't see that, look how well sanctions have worked against Iran and North Korea: their leaders are as stong as ever, and NK got nukes.

And I would like to reiterate that there are plenty of things people can do to fight Putin and help Ukraine, better things than just paying more money for less fossil fuel: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/qkhoBJRNQT4EFWos7/what-are-effective-ways-to-help-ukrainians-right-now

For the third time: instead of sanctions, businesses should donate every dollar of profit (resulting from sales in Russia) to anti-Putin causes such as supporting Russian independent media or sending assistance to Ukraine. And instead of refusing to buy Russian goods, impose a voluntary tariff by (1) buying Russian goods only if they are discounted, (2) donating all the money saved to anti-Putin causes.
